Germany dealt big blow as Werner set to miss World Cup

Germany hves been dealt with a big blow ahead of the Qatar FIFA World Cup with forward Timo Werner set to miss the tournament after sustaining an injury.

Werner will miss the World Cup after tearing his ankle ligaments during RB Leipzig’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Polish side Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

INJURY EXPLAINED

“Timo Werner suffered an ankle injury in the win over Shakhtar on Wednesday,” Leipzig confirmed.

“Scans in Leipzig showed that he has unfortunately torn the syndesmosis ligament in his left angle and will therefore be out for the rest of 2022.

Werner spent the last two seaons in the English Premier League in the colours of Chelsea. However he failed to showcase his full potential of scoring goals in England.

The 26-year old subsequently returned to his home country Germany to rejoin Leipzig which is the club he played for before making a switch to The Blues.

The Speedy attacker has expressed pain of missing the global showpiece and thanked those who have sent messages of support.

“A very tough one to take for me, I will be out for the next weeks,” Werner said in a tweet.

“I will miss the World Cup and I will have to support Leipzig and Germany from the couch unfortunately. Thanks for all your messages.”

The four-time World Cup champions Germany last lifted the trophy in 2014 when they defeated Argentina 1-0 in Brazil.

Hansi Flick-coached team will be looking to make amends after a disappointing showing in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which saw them fall short in the group stages as the defending champions.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted by Qatar will take centre stage from the 20th of November and will finish on the 18th of December.

This will be the first World Cup to be played in the end of year calendar as it was previously played between June/July.
