It’s official: Thomas Tuchel has been unveiled as the new head coach of the England men’s team.

The German will officially take charge on 1 January 2025, with his 18-month contract lasting up until the conclusion of England’s 2026 Fifa World Cup campaign.

As a Uefa Champions League winner with Chelsea, the 51-year-old said at his unveiling that he would do his best to “make our dream come true” at the World Cup as the Three Lions look for their first trophy since 1966.

“I want to put the second star [for a World Cup win] on this shirt. We will work hard for the biggest target in football, making our dream come true at the World Cup 2026,” he said.

Tuchel becomes just the third non-British permanent England men’s boss after Sven-Goran Eriksson (2001 to 2006) and Fabio Capello (2008 to 2012).

When asked to address critics who feel that England should have an English manager, Tuchel said that he “loves” working in the country.

“I’m sorry I just have a German passport. But I can tell them; and maybe all of those supporters also felt my passion for the English Premier League and the country, and how I love to live and work here,” he said.

“Hopefully I can convince them and show them and prove to them I am proud to be an English manager and do everything to show respect to this role and this country and the target for the next 18 months.”
