Gemma Fassie Brings Brenda Fassie’s Spirit to Life

In Newtown’s Market Theatre on November 3, family, friends, and South African music fans gathered to celebrate what would have been Brenda Fassie’s 61st birthday. Hosted by media personality Nomuzi Mabena, the “Spotify GLOW” tribute event proved that Brenda’s influence still resonates across generations and Gemma Fassie, her talented niece, was front and centre.

Gemma stunned attendees with a recreation of Brenda’s iconic style, capturing the singer’s bold stage presence and magnetic charm. Fans were quick to share clips on TikTok, with Gemma posing next to the famous Brenda Fassie statue across the Bassline building, a moment that blended nostalgia with pride.

A Celebration of Legacy Through Photos, Panels, and Music

The tribute offered more than just star-studded appearances. Curated by Maria McCloy, a photo exhibition showcased rare images, footage, and personal archives of Brenda Fassie’s life, from her rebellious beginnings to the glamorous, fearless performer she became.

Panel discussions gave deeper insight into Brenda’s cultural impact. The first, “The Enduring Legacy of Brenda Fassie: Why Mabrr Lives”, highlighted her fearless nature and lasting influence on South African music. The second, “Brenda Fassie Remembered”, reunited industry legends including Blondie Makhene, Chicco Twala, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, and songwriter Melvyn Matthews, who shared personal memories and reflections.

Spotify contributed to the tribute with a short documentary, “The Impact of Brenda Fassie”, featuring contemporary artists such as Langa Mavuso, Zoë Modiga, Muneyi, and Nanette. They reflected on the “Weekend Special” hitmaker’s unapologetic energy, musical talent, and enduring inspiration for young South African artists.

Gemma Fassie: Carving Her Own Path

While the event celebrated Brenda, it was also a reminder that the Fassie family’s musical gift lives on. Gemma Fassie has been steadily making a name for herself in R&B, blending Afro influences with soulful contemporary sounds.

Her latest project, Island 22, released earlier this year, was described as a personal journey of self-discovery and healing after heartbreak. In interviews, Gemma shared that her music is a reflection of her life experiences, allowing listeners to feel the emotion behind every note.

Gemma’s journey in music began at 13, performing at open mics in Cape Town, studying music in high school, and eventually learning to produce and engineer her own tracks. Her first single, Best Life, debuted in 2020, followed by the EP After Hours. In 2023, she earned a nomination at the Basadi In Music Awards, cementing her position as one of South Africa’s rising R&B stars.

Balancing Heritage and Individuality

For Gemma, carrying the Fassie name is both inspiration and motivation. “For me, that’s a reminder that as a little black, mixed-race girl, I can achieve anything,” she said. While her aunt’s legacy sets a high standard, Gemma has carved her own identity, drawing on influences from Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston in her childhood to H.E.R., Jhené Aiko, Kehlani, and Victoria Monét today.

At the tribute, her performance was a testament to this balance, honouring Brenda’s fearless energy while showcasing her own soulful, contemporary voice. Fans left the Market Theatre reminded that while Brenda Fassie’s legend is timeless, the next generation of Fassies, led by Gemma, is keeping the spirit alive in a vibrant, modern sound.
