Gavin Hunt provides Bernard Parker update

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed that former Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker is training with the club as more transfer business is planned at the Tshwane side.

FARPost on Tuesday reported that Parker had just started training with the club, a development Hunt confirmed on the sidelines of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season launch on Thursday in Randburg.

The 35-year-old cut ties with Kaizer Chiefs two months ago and was tipped to take a non-playing role at Amakhosi. However, that is yet to happen.

He is now searching for a new club and his former mentor, Hunt, revealed that he had shown what he is capable of during the few days of training.

“Bernard is training with us. Obviously, I am trying to do something there. I think he is a fantastic player, but that’s something we will see. Obviously, nothing has been signed yet,” Hunt said.

He added that the striking position was one they needed to beef up. Matsatsantsa largely relied on Thamsanqa Gabuza after Bradley Grobler sustained an injury last season.

A third experienced player is what the former Bidvest Wits and Chiefs coach will be looking to do ahead of the new season.

“Besides his quality as a player, he is fantastic. He has shown in the last two or three days in training that he has still got it. I think in that position, we need somebody, but obviously, nothing has been signed and sealed yet.”

Hunt, whose last coaching stint was with Chippa United, has already brought in another veteran – former Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo on a free transfer. He joined them from Orlando Pirates after a difficult two seasons.

Ricardo Goss has joined them from Mamelodi Sundowns, replacing Ronwen Williams, who signed a five-year deal with the DStv Premiership champions. Goss is on a two-year loan deal.

Grant Margeman and Thabang Sibanyoni also joined the Tshwane side on loan from Sundowns.
