Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is planning to build 17 new schools in busy communities.
He has set aside R1.6-billion for this through Gauteng’s infrastructure development department.
The new schools are part of the department’s plan for new and replacement schools.
The department’s budget for 2024-25 is R65.8-billion, which is R2.4-billion more than last year.
On Wednesday, Chiloane told the Gauteng provincial legislature that the number of learners is growing fast, with about 50,000 new learners each year over the last five years.
“We will focus on new buildings and fixing up old ones,” Chiloane said.
The department also received R1.5-billion from the National Treasury to build 18 more schools over the next three years. Contracts have been given out, and construction will start soon.
Four more schools will be built by the Development Bank of South Africa.
Chiloane said the department’s plan aims to improve the quality of education by helping teachers and learners.
“This will make teaching better and help students learn more. We are also working on ways to help families who struggle with literacy and poverty,” he said.
