Crime, bullying, gangsterism and substance abuse are emerging as major threats to learners across Gauteng, raising fresh concerns about safety inside and around schools.
The concerns were highlighted in Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile’s post-consultative report following the province-wide “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” outreach programme.
More than 11,000 residents took part in the programme between May and July 2026. Parents, educators, learners and community leaders repeatedly raised concerns about violence and safety during the engagements.
Communities raise alarm over school safety
According to Maile, communities across different districts identified crime, violence, bullying, gangsterism, substance abuse, vandalism, weapons and intimidation as problems affecting schools.
Gender-based violence was also among the concerns raised during the consultations.
The findings point to a wider problem extending beyond school grounds, with social instability in surrounding communities also affecting learners and their education.
Maile said unsafe environments can have a direct impact on educational outcomes.
“Learning cannot flourish where fear dominates,” he said.
Calls for policing and stronger discipline
Communities have called for more visible policing around schools as authorities look for ways to improve learner safety.
The report also identified calls for stronger anti-drug campaigns, improved learner discipline and greater access to psychosocial support services.
However, Maile warned that policing alone would not solve violence affecting schools.
He said parents also have an important role to play in addressing learner behaviour and helping protect school communities.
Gauteng plans stronger partnerships
The Gauteng government plans to continue strengthening partnerships aimed at improving safety around educational institutions.
These partnerships include the South African Police Service, Community Policing Forums, municipalities and social service professionals.
Maile said schools cannot be separated from the crime, violence and instability affecting the communities around them.
The findings place renewed pressure on authorities, families and communities to work together to create safer spaces where Gauteng learners can focus on their education without fear.
