Three police officers from the Gauteng Crime Intelligence Provincial Office, along with a suspected informant, were arrested on yesterday afternoon in Tokoza.
The group is accused of conducting a business robbery at a container shop owned by a Pakistani national near the Letsoho Shopping Centre.
According to reports, the suspects entered the premises and identified themselves as police officials while demanding illicit cigarettes.
They allegedly handcuffed the owner and his four assistants before loading boxes of the contraband into their vehicles.
The situation was brought to an end when the business owner alerted the Thathazonke Anti-Crime Community Group. The group responded immediately, apprehending the suspects in a citizen’s arrest.
Their identities as provincial Crime Intelligence personnel were subsequently confirmed by their commanding officer.
A search of the scene led to the seizure of five boxes of illicit cigarettes, four replica firearms, and two official state-issued weapons.
CCTV footage from the shop has been secured as evidence, and the suspects are scheduled to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court this Monday.
