Marumo Gallants won a hard-fought battle at the Peter Mokaba Stadium against Stellenbosch, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s penalty the decider in the 1-0 victory.

It was a big win for Gallants, a fourth successive victory in all competitions for Dan Malesela’s team, who are now tenth on the DStv Premiership table.

Marumo Gallants 1-0 Stellenbosch

King Ndlovu had to be alert to deny Ashley Du Preez in the fifth minute, while Katlego Otladisa shot wide a minute later at the other end.

Juan Ortiz had a great chance in the 19th minute, but his initial attempt was blocked, and he was unable to finish off after regathering the ball. Two minutes later Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo’s effort was comfortably saved by Sage Stephens.

Ortiz had another chance in the 31st minute after Junior Mendieta had robbed the Gallants defence of the ball, but the Venezuelan shot just wide.

Gallants were awarded a penalty in the 38th minute when Celimpilo Ngema was adjudged to have been fouled by Ortiz. Ndlondlo stepped up to take the spot-kick and beat Stephens to make it 1-0, which was the scoreline at the half-time break.

Mendieta’s long-range attempt a minute into the second half forced Ndlovu into a save, while Stephens was called into action in the 49th minute when he had to make a diving save to stop Ngema’s free-kick.

Ibraheem Jabaar shot over in the 58th minute, as Stellenbosch continued to dominate the chances created, while Ndlovu had to be alert to stop Marc Van Heerden’s dangerous cross moments later.

Jabaar tested Ndlovu again in the 71st minute, but the Gallants goalkeeper made a good save to stop the long-range attempt.

Stellenbosch kept creating chances and while Zitha Kwinika went close in the 88th minute, his shot was deflected behind.

But despite all the pressure, Steve Barker’s team were unable to find the back of the net, and Gallants picked up a valuable three points.
