TS Galaxy and AmaZulu shared the spoils as it ended goalless in their DStv Premiership fixture at the Wits Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The fixture was played at the Wits ground due to Galaxy’s home venue, the Mbombela Stadium, being used yesterday for the Springboks rugby match against the All Blacks. But it was perhaps the apt place for Sibusiso Vilakazi to make his first Galaxy start, as it was the stadium where he played many of his early professional games.
It was the Rockets who took the early control of the game, dominating possession, but although they were threatening, chances were few, though Marks Munyai’s cross-come-shot went just over in the 17th minute.
An acrobatic attempt from Usuthu debutant Gabadinho Mhango went wide two minutes later, as AmaZulu began to see more of the ball, and wrestled the momentum away from the home team.Thendo Mukumela, also on debut, had a chance in the 23rd minute, but his long-range attempt was deflected wide. It was Usuthu’s new boys getting the chances, and George Maluleka’s free kick attempt two minutes later flew just over the goal.
Just before half-time, Lindokhule Mbatha had the best chance for the home team, but his shot went across the goal and wide.
Galaxy thought they had a penalty for a handball in the opening minute of the second half, as the home team started the second 45 like they had the first.
Mhango had another chance in the 58th minute, but it was dealt with comfortably by Melusi Buthelezi, while at the other end Ebrahim Seedat was off target two minutes later. Having replaced Sibusiso Vilakazi from the bench, Orebotse Mongae’s shot in the 71st minute was on target, but straight at Veli Mothwa.
Former Galaxy striker Augustine Kwem also came on as a substitute for AmaZulu and had a chance in the 79th minute, but his header went just over.
Mothwa was called into action in the 83rd minute to deny a well-struck shot from substitute Masilake Phohlongo.
The Rockets were aggrieved when a penalty wasn’t awarded in stoppage time after Mbatha’s cross clearly struck Bonginkosi Ntuli’s outstretched hand in the box. However, Michael Mosimeng waved play on and it remained goalless when the final whistle was blown.
