Buti Masukela, a G4S security guard, appeared briefly in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.
The 51-year-old was apprehended at the Mangaung Correctional Complex on Tuesday.

Masukela is linked to the May 2017 escape of convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester.
He is the fifth accused in the Thabo Bester case, alongside Doctor Nandipha Magudumana, her father Zolile Sekeleni, IT specialist Teboho Lipholo, and ex-G4S employee Senohe Matsoara.
Masukela has been remanded in detention until the 3rd and 4th of May in order to make a formal bail application.
“Your case is remanded until 3 and 4 May in the same court for the co-accused and for your possible bail application. You will remain in custody until then,” said magistrate Mohlolo Khabisi.
