Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker was furious with the match officials after his side’s 2-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
The visitors conceded after 11 minutes from a penalty, which was converted by former Stellies striker Ashley du Preez.
Just five minutes later, things went from bad to worse as goalkeeper Sage Stephens was sent off for a handball outside the box, which was the ninth red card an opponent received against Chiefs this season.
Keagan Dolly made it 2-0 for the hosts after 25 minutes, but Stellenbosch drew one back just after the break via Ibraheem Jabaar and kept the game tight until the final whistle.
After the final whistle, Barker was furious and couldn’t contain his anger in the post-match interview.
“It’s not often that I get as upset as I am but we don’t get given enough time to cool down to I’m going to say it as it is,” a furious Barker told SuperSport TV.
“I think Kaizer Chiefs, they must have practice sessions against 10 players more often than any other club. It seems that’s all they play against. 10 men at training and penalties, that’s all.
“For me it was one of the worst refereeing performances as I’ve ever witnessed. I don’t deny that some of the free-kicks or tackles against them were there but we’ve got what? How many free-kicks around the box did Kaizer Chiefs get? 7, 8, 9! How many have we got? Not one!
“When you get a card, down a man, what can I say? Boys came back second half far better team, unlucky not to get a point but yeah it’s unfortunate.”
Stellenbosch return to action on 9 April when they will face Royal AM in another away trip.
