Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, the founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards, has passed away at the age of 52.

The beloved TV and radio presenter died early on Monday morning at Parklands Hospital in Johannesburg after battling lung cancer.

Her husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule, shared the news on X.

“She departed to be with the Lord in the early hours of 12 August at Parklands Hospital. We are grateful for the prayers, love, and support we received throughout her illness,” he wrote.

He said the family would appreciate privacy while they navigate this challenging time.

Zanele was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year and received strong support from fans and media personalities.

She started feeling unwell in April and underwent surgery after experiencing shortness of breath.

The news of her illness was first shared by her husband on Ukhozi FM, where she hosted the popular gospel show Eshilo on Sundays.

Earlier this year, gospel artists and preachers, including Rebecca Malope and Bishop Benjamin Dube, gathered at the Assemblies of God church in Sandton to pray for her recovery.

The Crown Gospel Music Awards, which Zanele founded, have played a major role in celebrating South Africa’s gospel music industry.
