Lyle Foster says that patience was key for Burnley as they secured their first FA Cup quarter-final spot since the 2002/03 season.
Foster was handed a starting berth by manager, Vincent Kompany on Wednesday night, and completed 83 minutes as he led the line for his team against a stubborn Fleetwood Town side that have proven difficult to beat for many teams recently.
The 22-year-old showed elements of what he was capable of with some well-timed runs, and could have had a goal and an assist on a different day with the opportunities that came his way.
Ultimately, though, it was Connor Roberts who got the job done with a 90th-minute winner at the death, and Foster says that they always believed that it would just be a matter of time before the deadlock – though admitted there was relief to get the job done normal time.
“I’m very happy with the way we played,” the Bafana Bafana international told iDiski Times after the game.
“And the way we showed ourselves, but I think the most important thing was getting through to the next round and I’m pleased that we did… They were a tough team, tough to break down, especially when they got the red card and sat back.
“We had to be really patient, and wait for our moment. We had a few, but were unlucky, finally in the end we got it in the last minute though.
“We had 31 shots, and I don’t know how much possession, but for the majority it felt like we controlled the game and it was just a matter of time until we scored – thankfully we could do that in the 90 minutes.
“It was nice to win it without having to go to extra-time, so I’m happy for the guys, we’re all happy that we’re in the next round and now we focus on Saturday again.”
Saturday will see the Clarets make the short trip to Blackpool as they look to take one more step closer to the Promised Land of the Premier League, and Foster will be hoping that he gets another chance to get off the mark in England.
