Former Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe is back at the local football governing body as chief operations officer (COO).
Motlanthe takes over the role previously held by CEO Lydia Monyepao, which has been vacant since May last year.
It seems like a role swap, as Motlanthe and Monyepao are now in each other’s previous jobs. Motlanthe will work under Monyepao.
“The position of COO has always been part of Safa but was vacant. We are happy that Adv Motlanthe has agreed to return,” Safa president Danny Jordaan told the organisation’s media.
“We want to have winning national teams, strengthen school sports, qualify for the Fifa Women’s and Men’s World Cups, Afcon, and Wafcon, improve our administration, and work on the 2031 Fifa Women’s World Cup bid.”
When Motlanthe left Safa in May 2023, his relationship with Jordaan had broken down.
Motlanthe felt his name was being dragged through the mud, and they disagreed on major decisions, especially about financial issues.
However, they seem to have worked out their differences, and Motlanthe is happy to be back.
“I am happy to be back and part of a group that is working on making Safa a world-class organisation,” he said.
After serving six months in an interim position, Motlanthe spent two years as Safa CEO.
