Former Pirates star explains what Ouaddou is doing differently from Riveiro

Former Orlando Pirates defender Ayanda Gcaba has highlighted the difference between Jose Riveiro and Abdeslam Ouaddou’s coaching styles.

Both coaches have been successful in their first seasons when they joined the Buccaneers.

Riveiro won two trophies in his debut season, and followed up the success in his second. The Spaniard’s last season only saw him with the MTN8 but took the club to the CAF Champions League semi-final.

Ouaddou on the other hand, has already won two trophies in his debut season and is a win away from completing a treble.

Gcaba feels the Buccaneers are more direct under the Moroccan coach.

Ex-Pirates defender says Ouaddou has changed Pirates

“For me I’d say it’s their way of playing, this season they were more different than previous seasons; this season we had a lot of attacking players, who are direct, nice combination plays,” Gcaba told Gagasi FM Sport.

“And they are scoring, Pirates throughout the seasons, even during our time, scoring (was difficult), yes we were scoring but not that much. Even defensively, (in the past) it was shaky but it’s right now.”

The former Pirates centre-back also praised the defence, especially goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

“They’ve improved a lot. (Sipho) Chaine now has 19 clean-sheets, he could go to 20. So it’s a confidence-booster that at least we’re not conceding too many goals, we’re scoring goals and we’re winning games; that on its own plays a big part,” Gcaba added.

Under Ouaddou, Pirates have conceded just 12 goals all season and are on their way to win their first league title in 14 years.
