Former Pirates & Chiefs Players Called Up By Zambia

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Lazarous Kambole as well as former Orlando Pirates striker Augustine Mulenga were called into the Zambia squad for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

Kambole has revived his career after leaving Chiefs at the end of last season. However, it wasn’t an easy route back into the Chipolopolo squad as he initially joined Young Africans but wasn’t registered by the Tanzanian side.

However, a January move to ZESCO on loan has done the 29-year-old real good and being called into the preliminary squad by Zambia coach Avram Grant.

If he makes the final squad, Kambole could make his first appearance for the national team since October 2019, when he featured in a 1-1 with Niger.

In addition to Kambole, Mulenga has also been recalled after making a return to the Super League, joining Napsa Stars. The 33-year-old last featured for Zambia in a 3-3 draw with Algeria in March 2021.

In Cyril Mwenya Chibwe and Charles Zulu two more former Premier Soccer League players have been called into the 27-man provisional Zambia squad, which only includes local players.

Zambia take on Lesotho in a double header in Group H of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, having picked up one win from their first two games. It will be Grant’s first two games in charge after he replaced Aljosa Asanovic.
