The announcement of the former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu defender-cum-midfielder follows a short assessment period, during which the utility player impressed the technical team.

The Chippa United move this Mobara’s fifth top-flight club after Ajax Cape Town, the Buccaneers, Cape Town City and Usuthu.

Chippa United confirmed the move with a statement on social media: “A new chapter begins. Welcome to the Chilli Boys family, Abbubaker Mobara.”

END OF A LONG CLUBLESS SPELL

The 31-year-old had been without a club for six months following his departure from AmaZulu, where his stint ended after a fallout with head coach Arthur Zwane.

Mobara had arrived at Chippa earlier this month for evaluation, as previously reported by iDiski Times. The Eastern Cape outfit have now formalised the deal, giving the experienced campaigner a chance to revive his career in the Betway Premiership.

Chippa head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi is familiar with Mobara, having previously worked with him at AmaZulu. During Vilakazi’s brief nine-match spell at Usuthu last season, Mobara featured in six matches.

The former Orlando Pirates star quickly made his debut on Saturday. The Chilli Boys claimed their second win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Orbit College in Rustenberg.

MR VERSATILE BRINGS EXPERIENCE TO THE CHILLI BOYS

Mobara, a Mitchells Plain native and Cape Town Spurs academy product, made his professional debut at just 18 years old for the club formerly known as Ajax Cape Town.

Known for his versatility, he is capable of playing at centre-back, right-back and defensive midfield. He has earned nine caps for Bafana Bafana and remains remembered for his standout performance against Brazil’s Neymar at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Chippa will hope Mobara’s experience, leadership and tactical flexibility can help lift the club out of the relegation zone.
