The countdown to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season has officially begun after the Premier Soccer League (PSL) released the opening weekend fixtures.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates, and rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns were all handed intriguing opening assignments.

DIARISE | Soweto derby dates for 2026/27 Betway Premiership season confirmed

Orlando Pirates will launch the defence of their league crown at home to newly promoted Milford FC, while Kaizer Chiefs begin a new era under head coach Fernando Da Cruz with an away trip to Kruger United.

Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, welcome Marumo Gallants to Loftus Versfeld as they look to wrestle the title back from the Buccaneers.

Orlando Pirates open title defence at Orlando Stadium

The defending champions will get the new campaign underway on Saturday, 1 August, when they host Milford FC at Orlando Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30, with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit facing a daunting first-ever Betway Premiership fixture under owner-coach Xanti Pupuma.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will be hoping the Buccaneers can make an immediate statement as they bid to become back-to-back league champions.

Da Cruz’s first competitive test

Kaizer Chiefs’ first competitive match under new head coach Fernando Da Cruz will come later that evening against fellow newcomers Kruger United.

The encounter at Mbombela Stadium kicks off at 20:15 and represents the start of what supporters hope will be a vastly improved league campaign after several inconsistent seasons.

Sundowns begin quest to reclaim title

Mamelodi Sundowns will also be in action on the opening Saturday, hosting Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld at 18:00.

The Brazilians, who surrendered the league title last season after eight consecutive wins, will be eager to begin strongly in what promises to be another fiercely contested championship race.

Other opening weekend fixtures

Elsewhere, Golden Arrows welcome Chippa United to King Zwelithini Stadium, while Stellenbosch FC host AmaZulu in an all-coastal clash at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Sekhukhune United, now coached by Cedric Kaze, begin their campaign at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium against Durban City, who are coached by Khalil Ben Youssef.

Kaze and Youssef were Kaizer Chiefs’ co-coaches last season until they were replaced in the off-season by Da Cruz.

The duo helped lead Amakhosi to third place in the final standings – and a place in this season’s MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s fixtures see Richards Bay host Polokwane City and Siwelele FC entertain TS Galaxy.

The opening round will be followed by the MTN8 quarter-finals on 8 and 9 August, ensuring an exciting start to the South African football calendar.
