Former Kaizer Chiefs captain’s days at Naturena are numbered

Msimango’s move to Kaizer Chiefs was considered a success after his first season back in 2023.

Under coach Cavin Johnson, the former TS Galaxy defender was appointed captain and even received a call-up to the Bafana Bafana national team. However, his second season was disrupted by injuries, limiting him to just 11 appearances.

With the arrival of a new coach and the signings of Miguel Inacio and Rushwin Dortley, Msimango has fallen the pecking order.

During pre-season, the former Kaizer Chiefs captain expressed his eagerness to reclaim his spot in the starting lineup. However, four months into the season, he has yet to make a single appearance.

“It feels good to be back. I went through quite a scary injury, but it’s nothing I haven’t experienced before,” Msimango told the Amakhosi media team.

Msimango fit but does he still have a place at Kaizer Chiefs?

“It kept me out for two months, but now I am back, training well, recovering, and regaining my strength.” He added, “These medical assessments are extremely important because they serve as a benchmark for the upcoming season. They help you see where you stand, as well as your strengths and weaknesses.”

Currently, Kaizer Chiefs have settled on a center-back pairing of Aden McCarthy and Miguel, with Zitha Kwinika and Dortley as backups.

Msimango’s chances of making it into the first team appear slim, and he may consider seeking game time elsewhere.

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef did indicate that the defender was back to full fitness.

“Given [Msimango] is part of the team, he is ready. It’s just about his fitness now and he will be ready; we will introduce him,” he said.

At 28, Msimango’s days at Chiefs are numbered and he could leave at the end of the season if he fails to make an appearance.

Should Msimango leave or fight for his place in the team?
