Former coach describes Kaizer Chiefs problem

Kaizer Chiefs are creating chances and winning games, but a former coach believes individual decision-making is stopping them from scoring freely.

Amakhosi managed to stay competitive since the turn of the year, picking up four wins from five matches, yet the feeling remains that they are leaving goals on the table.

Despite regularly getting into good attacking positions and generating scoring opportunities, Kaizer Chiefs have found it difficult to put matches beyond doubt, scoring just five goals across those five outings.

GOAL DROUGHT EXPLAINED

Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Sergio Dos Santos believes the issue is not tactical but behavioural, pointing to what happens when players arrive in front of goal.

According to the Portuguese coach, Amakhosi often choose the difficult option over the simple one, turning promising situations into missed chances.

The recent loss to Stellenbosch FC highlighted the problem clearly, with Kaizer Chiefs failing to convert their opportunities while their opponents were far more efficient with fewer chances.

“Kaizer Chiefs had many chances against Stellenbosch on Wednesday, and they didn’t use them and Stellenbosch used their chances, Chiefs they were unlucky, but you have to give a lot of credit to Stellenbosch,” Dos Santos told KickOff.

Santos added that this has been a recurring theme throughout the season, where moments that require calm decision-making instead become rushed attempts at personal glory.

“The problem with Kaizer Chiefs is they miss chances, and you can’t miss chances like that, you can’t. It’s been the story of Kaizer Chiefs this season where one player breakthrough, and gets an opportunity to square the ball to his free running teammate to score, and what does he do, he tries to score from an impossible angle.

“There’s few players in this Kaizer Chiefs team who wants to be heroes, they don’t want to be the person who made an assist to somebody else,” Dos Santos added.
