Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock was found dead at his Athens home at the age of 31.

Baldock had just joined Panathinaikos after seven years at Sheffield United, where he played over 200 games. He last played on Sunday against Olympiacos.

Super League Greece broke the sad news in a statement.

“The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Panathinaikos echoed the sentiment on social media: “We are shocked by the loss of our George. The Panathinaikos’ family mourns his unexpected loss. We stand with his family and relatives.”

The Greek Football Federation added: “With deep sadness and pain, the National Team and

the Hellenic Football Federation say goodbye to George Baldock. Condolences to his family. Goodbye.”

Born in England, Baldock started at MK Dons before joining Sheffield United in 2017. He played 12 matches for Greece.

Former teammate Harry Maguire and Northampton Town, where Baldock once played, also paid tribute to the “tragically young” star.

The cause of death has not yet been announced.
