Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has shared how former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger influenced the team’s decision to appoint Romain Folz as assistant coach.
Folz joined Sundowns in July after leaving his role as a performance manager at Fifa, where he worked under Wenger.
Mngqithi explained that Wenger’s recommendation played a crucial role.
“If Arsene Wenger recommends him, he’s good enough. Arsene is not a pushover,” Mngqithi told Marawa Sports Worldwide.
“He was brought to Fifa by Wenger, and I kept in contact because I knew I wanted to work with him in my next job. I trust his ability and demeanour.”
Wenger has been Fifa’s chief of global football development since November 2019.
Folz’s previous coaching stints in the PSL were not very successful, with short terms at Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu.
Despite this, Mngqithi sees great potential in Folz.
Mngqithi praised Folz’s eye for talent, noting players like Junior Dion, Toure, and Lesiba Nku, who thrived under his management.
“Just look at the matches during his time at Marumo, and you’ll see his quality,” said Mngqithi.
“I know what I want from Romain, and he’s already starting to deliver. The players’ perspectives have changed because they trust his guidance.”
Folz now works alongside Mngqithi and veteran trainer Steve Komphela in Sundowns’ revamped technical team.
