AmaZulu coach Romain Folz praised January signing Jody February after he made his debut for the club following his loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
February joined Usuthu in this January transfer window from the reigning champions, where he did not play a single match in the first half of the season.
The 26-year-old was outstanding for Usuthu as they beat Tornado FC 3-2 in the Nedbank last-32 at King Zwelithini Stadium.
Veli Mothwa, who is now the club skipper since Makheleni Makhaula left to join Orlando Pirates, was on the bench to watch on as February started.
“I think he did fine,” said Folz.
“I think his distribution especially was very much on point. I’m not surprised, I knew what I was getting with him joining us on loan, and it’s good to know that I have good competition in the goalkeeping department.”
It’s already the third loan of the 2016 Olympian, who was the star at his previous club Ajax Cape Town, leading Sundowns to sign him in 2019 but he hasn’t made a single appearance for them since.
Meanwhile, Folz believes that he’ll provide more competition in AmaZulu’s goalkeeping position.
“The competitions in between, especially in that goalkeeping department, is always beneficial to the players,” said Folz when asked what it means for the future of Mothwa after such a good showing in goals.
“If you look at our left-back position, (we have) Sibusiso Mabiliso and Riann Hanamub. If you look at the centre-backs, Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Veluyeke Zulu – everyone has someone to challenge with.
“It is only fair that the goalkeeper has someone to challenge him, and I’m going to do the same thing I have been doing to other players on the field.Whoever I believe is going to give me more is going to play.
“But to be honest with you, Veli, he has been doing an excellent job and really, really good. I cannot ask for more.

“If I have two ‘keepers who are giving me a lot, it is my job to take the decision. It is always good to have quality in every department on the field.”
As this has provided a nice headache to Folz, he will have to choose either one of them when Usuthu host TS Galaxy at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday (20:00).
