FlySafair under fire after alleged data breach during R12 birthday ticket sale

South African low-cost airline FlySafair is facing public backlash after reports emerged that some customers’ private information may have been exposed during its highly publicised R12 birthday ticket promotion.

The promotion, which marked the airline’s anniversary and drew massive online traffic, saw thousands of customers rushing to secure limited R12 flight tickets. However, shortly after the sale went live, social media users began raising concerns that personal booking details were visible to other users during the process.

Screenshots and claims circulating online suggested that some customers were able to view other passengers’ names, booking details and in certain cases, partial travel information while navigating the booking system. The allegations quickly spread across platforms, with many users calling the incident a serious data privacy breach.

As the conversation intensified, some customers expressed frustration over what they described as a lack of clear communication from the airline during the high-demand sale. Others pointed out that while promotional traffic surges can cause system strain, the potential exposure of personal information raises serious concerns about data protection and system security.

At this stage, the full scope of the alleged leak has not been independently verified, and it remains unclear how many users may have been affected. However, the incident has reignited broader discussions about cybersecurity in South Africa’s online booking and e-commerce systems, especially during large-scale promotional campaigns.

FlySafair has previously been known for its smart pricing strategies and popular flash sales, but the latest controversy has placed renewed attention on the balance between high-traffic marketing campaigns and the safeguarding of customer data.

Consumers are now calling for transparency from the airline regarding what went wrong during the promotion and what steps will be taken to ensure stronger data protection measures in future sales.

The situation continues to develop as customers await an official detailed response addressing the concerns raised online.

This is a developing story.
