At least five people were killed and more than 15 others were injured in separate accidents across the country between Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday morning, four people died and three others were injured when the taxi they were travelling in collided with a bus on the N1 near the Baobab tollgate outside Musina in Limpopo.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the taxi was trying to avoid another vehicle when he went into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the bus.

Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, one person died and five others were injured in a collision involving a bakkie and a car at the corner of Umgeni and Quarry roads in Durban on Saturday night.

Advanced Life Support paramedic Garith Jamieson said they found that two vehicles had collided at the junction before one vehicle lost control, overturned, and came to rest on its roof.

“Paramedics did a quick triage and found that the one vehicle, a bakkie, had five occupants in it and the second vehicle had one occupant only. On assessment, it was found that one person from the bakkie, a male believed to be in his 40s, had sustained major injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene.

Four other occupants had sustained various injuries, and they were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for the further care they required. The second driver sustained minor injuries,” Jamieson said.

In Umhlanga Rocks, five people were injured after a drunk driver drove into another vehicle on the M4 road.

On the M27 near Waterloo, a 25-year-old motorcyclist was injured after he tried to overtake multiple vehicles and crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle.

In the Western Cape, two people were injured when the bakkie they were travelling in crashed into a wall on Saturday.

In Pelican Park, one person was injured when his car collided with another on Strandfontein Road.

One person was trapped in his vehicle after a collision on the N2 in Borcherds Quarry.

In Delft South, a taxi overturned into a wall, and two people sustained moderate injuries.
