Moving into your first apartment is an incredibly exciting experience. It can feel surreal to finally have a place of your own. However, the process of moving can also be overwhelming, as you need to ensure everything is organised.

Getting all the essentials for your first apartment can be costly, so it’s important to approach it with a plan. This is why having a checklist is essential.

Apartment checklist

When moving into your first apartment, it’s important to remember that you don’t need to purchase everything all at once. Many items can be bought later as you settle in. In the first few months, your main focus should be on getting comfortable in your new space. However, there are essential items that you should have before you move in. These include:

1. Kitchenware

If you’re not planning to get takeout every night, you’ll need to make use of your new kitchen. To begin, it is important to understand the fundamentals. Begin with a few key items and gradually add more as needed, but make sure to choose quality essentials from the start. Start with pots and pans, dishes, and utensils, as these are some of the first items you’ll need. Remember, they don’t have to be of high quality right away; you can invest in better kitchenware later on.

2. Bedroom essentials

Sleep is important, so if you can, having a new bed for your apartment is essential. You may want to spend a little bit extra to get something you know will be comfortable and last longer. If you can’t afford a decent mattress right now, it is also okay to start with what you can. Since it is your first apartment, there is more room to gather things at a later time. Get a comfortable pillow, sheets, duvets or curtains to complete your bedroom.

3. Cleaning supplies

You may be surprised at how much more motivated you are to keep your living space clean and organised when it’s your own. It’s important to maintain a tidy and clutter-free environment. Having the right cleaning essentials is crucial for this. You don’t need to invest in an expensive vacuum, but you should ensure you have the necessary supplies, such as brooms, mops, trash bins, buckets for mopping, and dishwashing liquid.

4. Furniture

Furniture may be part of the big essential purchases. When it comes to furniture, buy what you can afford at the time. While it is an important apartment essential, most furniture can be postponed until you have enough money to buy it. Eventually, though, you’re going to want a few things for your new apartment. Buy what you need and can afford.

You can, of course, get other apartment essentials that you may find necessary for your apartment. The definition of essential is subjective, but you’ll want to pick up a few other items before moving into your first apartment.
