The fire that gutted a building at the historic Johannesburg Country Club has been brought under control.

Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that the blaze has been contained and the EMS has handed the scene to relevant authorities for further investigation. At the moment, the cause of the fire is not known.

He said by about 8pm officials had managed to put out the blaze

Mulaudzi said officials responded to Tuesday’s fire incident at about 4.20pm, when the EMS received a structural fire call.

“On arrival at Johannesburg Country Club, firefighters found the building gutted with flames.

“Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene; fortunately, everyone evacuated when the fire started.

“The fire has been contained in the kitchen, dining hall, and reception area. At the moment, the cause of the fire is still a subject of investigation,” said Mulaudzi.

Meanwhile, the country club’s general manager Steve Nicholson has issued a short statement announcing that the place will be closed for the time being.

It read, in part, “Kindly be advised that the entire Auckland Park property will be closed until further notice to assess the extent of damages and to allow the committee and management to plan how we will continue to service members with impaired facilities.”
