After a thief stole Vuyokazi Nguqu’s phone from her house, she went to the Kleinvlei police station in Cape Town to report it. She was shocked when officers told her to find the thief.
“The officers told me I needed to find the culprit myself and bring them to the station,” Nguqu said.
At first, she thought they were joking and didn’t take them seriously.
“But then I realised they meant it when they moved on to assist other people. They said I had to investigate who took my phone and then come back to them.
“What do I know about investigations? If I did, I wouldn’t have gone to the police station,” Nguqu said.
“Now I understand why many people don’t report when they get robbed. We report cases because we need assistance and expect our cases to be taken seriously.”
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi encouraged the complainant to see the station commander of the Kleinvlei SAPS office.
“The station commander and the head of detectives will be in the best position to guide the complainant through the process and provide direction regarding the status of the case,” said Swartbooi.
“We trust that after the interaction with the station commander and the branch commander, the complainant will be at peace.”
