On Saturday morning, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula sent a cryptic tweet to his 2.7 million followers, saying, “Just landed in Ukraine,” and then went dead silent.
It wasn’t clear if he was polishing his makarapa in preparation for the Soweto Derby or if he was actually visiting the war-torn country. Mbalula and his spokespeople were unavailable for comment immediately, but ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe stated, “I suspect he has been hacked.”

He stated that he had spoken with Mbalula and that he will call back with more details. But, given the national importance of whether Mbalula had been to Ukraine, he became inaccessible and did not react to a reminder for an update on where the maverick minister was. Some people were surprised when Mbalula’s account retweeted a message from the Russian Embassy in South Africa.
Dear subscribers, we have received a great number of letters of solidarity from South Africans, both individuals and organizations. We appreciate your support and glad you decided to stand with us today, when Russia, like 80 years ago, is fighting Nazism in Ukraine! 🇷🇺🇿🇦 pic.twitter.com/vj0N6ClhSJ
Mbalula, who is more familiar with visits to the Southern Line in Cape Town, or getting furious taxi bosses to sit down and agree to a truce, was not immediately available to elaborate. South Africa’s ambassador to Ukraine, Andre Groenewald, said: “I have no information on that,” he said, on the phone from Budapest, when questioned about a possible visit.
The Minister went to Ukraine While the people waited on a train He announced his trip like it’s a vacation While people scratched through bricks to find a station He’s going to inspect the war he says While the suspects that warred on our stations are still on paid vacation.
