FIFA President Honours Former Bucs Midfielder

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has applauded former Orlando Pirates midfielder Marshall Munetsi for taking new initiative of helping through Munetsi foundation.

Stade de Reims recently extended the contract of the Zimbabwean international, who joined Pirates from Baroka in 2017, but left the Buccaneers after just two seasons to complete his move to Reims.

At Reims he has played a staring role, in particular this season, netting a career-high seven goals and setting up three more.

His new deal includes a special clause which will see the club donate €100 (R2,100) for every kilometre he covers on the field to the Marshall Munetsi foundation, which provides access to education for children from underprivileged communities. 

Fans at the stadium and TV viewers will be able to follow live the number of kilometres ran by the 26-year-old.

On Wednesday, the French Ligue 1 side welcomed Gelson Fernandes, Director of the FIFA Member Associations for Africa, accompanied by Solomon Mudege, Head of FIFA Development Programs (Africa) to present him with a special letter, ball and shirt, on behalf of the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino.

“Miles that make sense. Tthis magnificent initiative for Zimbabwean youth and your exemplary commitment to fight for a better world,” Infantino said via the letter to Munetsi and the entire club.

Former Swiss international, Fernandes then took the floor in front of the players and the professional staff to congratulate Munetsi on the superb initiative and his community work.
