Fibertime 1Gbps Fibre Tested In Alexandra

Fibertime has tested 1Gbps uncapped fibre in Alexandra, Johannesburg, with a prepaid price starting at R5 per day or R120 per month for one user.

The township-focused fibre network operator has positioned the test as part of its wider plan to expand low-cost, pay-as-you-go broadband in underserved South African communities.

Fibertime 1Gbps Fibre Tested In Alexandra

Fibertime founder Alan Knott-Craig said the company had tested 1Gbps broadband in Alexandra. According to MyBroadband, he said the service offers 24 hours of unlimited, uncapped and unshaped internet at 1000Mbps for R5.

However, the entry-level price applies to a single user and only one connected device. Fibertime also offers group plans for up to five concurrent connected devices at R15 per day or R200 per month.

The company’s model focuses on prepaid fibre access. On its website, Fibertime describes its service as pay-as-you-go fibre with no contracts, no debit orders and no credit checks.

The Fibertime 1Gbps fibre test builds on its existing township fibre strategy. The company already markets uncapped internet from R5 per day, while Nokia has also linked its technology partnership with Fibertime to low-cost, uncapped and unthrottled broadband access.

Township Fibre Rollout Continues

Knott-Craig launched Fibertime in November 2022 to provide affordable fibre in South African townships. He previously led companies including iBurst and Mxit.

According to MyBroadband, Fibertime’s network covers 48 areas across seven provinces and the company is building in another 22 areas. In April 2026, Knott-Craig said the network had passed 400,000 households.

That marked sharp growth from 10,000 households in early 2024 and 80,000 by February 2025. Earlier in April 2026, Fibertime reported about 1.14 million individual users on its network, including multiple users in the same households.

The expansion followed the Competition Tribunal’s April 2025 approval of a deal involving Fibertime, Refiber and Onepath Investments. Under that deal, Refiber and Onepath Investments would acquire dark fibre networks developed by Fibertime under a township rollout strategy.

Fibertime has also received backing from Finnfund. In March 2025, the Finnish development financier announced a €2 million follow-on investment to support Fibertime Group’s goal of connecting up to 1.8 million homes to the internet.

Hiring Push Supports Expansion Plans

Fibertime is also hiring as it expands its township network. MyBroadband reported that the company had advertised 14 full-time roles in June 2026, including area growth managers and regional maintenance managers.

The growth manager roles focus on turning expansion plans into connected homes. Fibertime said the role involves driving build execution, managing contractors and maintaining construction and safety standards.

The company is also hiring maintenance managers to protect uptime, resolve faults and manage degraded lines. These roles support Fibertime’s stated targets of reaching one million homes by mid-2027 and two million homes in 2028.
