A 30-year-old father is set to appear in the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court on Monday for allegedly killing his two-year-old son.
According to North West police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, the man had a heated argument with the mother of his three children before taking the tragic step.
“On Friday night, 30 August, the father went to his girlfriend’s house in Kanana, near Klerksdorp, and demanded his three children, aged eight, four, and two,” Funani said.
The children’s mother, 27, agreed to let them go on Saturday morning, but only if her brother accompanied them.
When they arrived at the father’s home, he sent the uncle away, leaving him with the two boys, aged two and eight. The uncle took the four-year-old home with him.
Later, the mother received a call from the father, warning her that something terrible was about to happen. Panicked, she contacted the children’s grandmother, who informed her that the father and the two boys were being rushed to the hospital after the father allegedly poisoned all three of them.
“The eight-year-old child did not swallow the substance,” said Funani. Tragically, the two-year-old died in hospital, while the father was arrested after being discharged on Thursday.
North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident, stating that the child had died at the hands of someone meant to protect him. Kwena also praised the swift investigation that led to the father’s arrest.
