During the now-viral discussion with David Mashabela, MacG spoke candidly about his family’s background and how his grandfather’s wealth created opportunities for future generations.

The clip resonated with viewers because it touched on a topic that remains out of reach for many South Africans: receiving a financial head start through inherited wealth.

Social media reacts

Some social media users praised MacG’s honesty, saying the conversation highlighted the importance of building a legacy for future generations.

Others pointed out that not everyone has access to inherited wealth, arguing that economic realities make it difficult for many families to accumulate assets that can be passed on to children and grandchildren.

“Old school rich. Now spaza shops are gone, we won’t see another Mac’s grandfather and another Maponya,” commented one X user.

“I always tell people that everyone who really makes it especially in entertainment industry is not from poverty or absolutely nothing. Each & everyone of them downplay their background all the A list celebrities in SA are not from poor background they exaggerate their situations,” added another.

Inspired by the story, another said, “This is the main reason I am working hard. To build a legacy for my children and their children. They don’t have to start at zero.”

Despite differing opinions, many agreed that the discussion opened an important dialogue about family wealth and financial opportunities.

A bigger conversation about legacy

The viral clip has reignited conversations about inheritance and the role family assets play in shaping future success. As debates continue online, MacG’s story has become a reminder of how generational wealth can influence opportunities long after it is created.

For many South Africans, the discussion is less about money itself and more about the lasting impact that family legacy can have across generations.
