Fans invade the pitch after Argentina lose at Olympics

The opening men’s football match at the Paris Olympics saw fans invade the pitch when Argentina lost 2-1 to Morocco.

The game at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne was interrupted by a pitch invasion, delaying play for over an hour on Wednesday.

When the game resumed, Argentina’s Cristian Medina thought he had scored a late equaliser, but it was ruled offside by VAR.

This led to fans throwing objects at the Argentine players.

Argentina’s coach, Javier Mascherano, was frustrated with the lack of communication from the organisers.

“We spent about an hour and a half in the dressing room where they never told us what was going to happen,” he said.

“The Moroccan captains didn’t want to play, we didn’t want to continue, and fans threw things at us. It’s the biggest circus I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Earlier, Argentina’s players had chanted a song that was considered “racist and discriminatory” by the French Football Federation, which caused booing from the crowd.

Organisers are investigating the pitch invasion and looking for ways to prevent these incidents in the future.

The incident raised concerns about the security and management of the Olympic Games.

In the match, Soufiane Rahimi scored twice for Morocco, while Giuliano Simeone scored for Argentina.

In another match, Spain beat Uzbekistan 2-1, with goals from Marc Pubill and Sergio Gómez.
