Football fans on social media are up in arms over the change to the iconic theme music for the Uefa Champions League.
Since the 1992-93 season, the goosebump-raising theme song has become a fan favourite, and social media users have not taken the changes well.
An overhaul of football’s biggest club competition was expected for the 2024-25 season. The tournament would move away from its traditional group stage format and toward a newly conceptualised league phase.
In a newly released television introduction video, some of European football’s biggest stars are pictured with the new song playing in the background.
While the background score stays true to its original tune, fans were quick to notice the alterations in the musical arrangements, with the new vocals the biggest difference.
A user on X wrote: “Please tell me this is an April Fool’s joke in August. Please tell me this isn’t true, please?”
Another user wrote: “Terrible. In addition, it’s still missing a phrase in Italian and Spanish, the two most important championships of the UCL.”
The competition’s new format will no longer see teams play three opponents home and away. Instead, sides will now partake in a league structure as they play against eight opponents, with four games at home and four away.
The league stage will kick off in mid-September, following the draw next Thursday.
