A family in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, says the Site B police are refusing to protect them from being abused and assaulted by a 35-year-old drug-addicted relative.

The family, who wants to stay anonymous, claimed they have been asking the police for help for a long time without success.

“My mother has been assaulted many times by her brother. We tried to intervene, but it didn’t help. Now he is also assaulting us,” said one family member.

They reported the incidents to the SAPS, but when they called the police station, they were told to come back when the suspect was actively assaulting them.

The suspect later returned with stolen goods hidden in a rubbish bin. When the family confronted him, he attacked them all.

“We called the police, but they told us to handle the situation ourselves,” the family member said.

“We want him to be arrested for theft and assault and kept in jail. We are afraid he will eventually kill one of us.

“If the police continue to ignore us, something terrible will happen. People need to know that we have been reporting this without receiving any help.”

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a spokesperson for the Western Cape SAPS, advised the family to make an appointment with the police station’s management to discuss their concerns.

He said the allegations could be appropriately investigated in this way.
