Explained: Why Chiefs Ticket Prices Have Increased
Stadium Management South Africa CEO Bertie Grobbelaar has explained why Kaizer Chiefs agreed to increase the ticket prices for their upcoming home games at FNB Stadium.
The Glamour Boys will welcome SuperSport United at 19:30 on Saturday, which will be their first home games with fans allowed in the stands since the beginning of Covid-19.
However, fans of the club were left wondering why the club decided to rise the ticket prices from R40 to R70 – a decision SMSA’s Grobbelaar explained with additional costs due to government regulations.
“We had a meeting with the club in the planning for the new season just before Covid and we decided to put in certain measures to enhance the spectator experience and the stadium experience for fans to the venue,” he said on Wednesday.
“That included, adding additional access points and measure at the stales, that would’ve [resulted] in a slight increase to the ticket price.
“Covid then hit us with the government regulations and requirements that added a total new line of security check points and additional layer. That increased the costing immensely.
“I can assure you that this weekend, the coming fixture is going to be run at a loss because of the implications of this and we need to marry the two.
“If we take the 8 000 tickets normally sold for a game of this nature, we’re planning with 8 000 – 2 000 of those tickets are complimentary tickets.
“At R40 a ticket, it leaves you with R240 000 to cover all the costs and that is inclusive JMPD, security, medical, the EMS requirements. It’s not electricity for the floodlights, that’s not stadium staff and personal.
“So the ticket price of R40 is no longer viable and it was a joint-decision with the club.”
