Explained: City Rovers owner on club sale issue

Platinum City Rovers owner Tyzer Temo has, for the first time, explained where rumours that he sold 50% of the club’s shares came from.

In a statement dated 2 August 2022, Turfloop FC announced that they have concluded a franchise transaction with the Platinum City Rovers FC, which gives the Club a 50% equity in the North West based ‘NFD Club’.

What Turfloop FC claimed

“The new deal will collapse the 2 footballing giants, into what will be known as the Turfloop City – which will be a holistic multi-sports development entity, that will develop and harness a plethora of sporting codes,” Turfloop said at the time.

“Turfloop City will be based in Germiston – Gauteng, and play its home games between Cape Town and Lephalale, in the Limpopo Province. The Germiston Stadium will be used as its alternative venue,” they further revealed.

But it turns out it was all a pipe dream and a premature announcement by the Limpopo-based club.

What City Rovers Chairman says

“None, there is nothing like that,” Temo told the media after their 2-1 loss to Baroka on Tuesday afternoon.

“What happened is that we had two teams in the ABC Motsepe League in the North West, which is Platinum City Rovers and a team called Dekgane Chiefs, which is our feeder.

Turfloop FC Statement

“So what happened is that they made a proposal and bought that ABC Motsepe League team Dekgane Chiefs. So they are now owning that team,” he said.

“This is from the horse’s mouth. I cannot lie to you. I am sure why [they always make claims of having bought] this team. But you can see the boys are happy. I am the sole owner of this team. I don’t have any other person [who co-owns the team].”

City Rovers were promoted to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of the 2020/21 season during the ABC Motsepe League national promotion playoffs.
