Popi Sibiya, who has taken social media by storm with her solo travels across Africa, was revealed to be under the mask of Pap and Wors on the latest episode of The Masked Singer South Africa season three, which aired on Saturday 25 July.
POPI SIBIYA UNMASKED AS POP AND WORS
On the latest episode of The Masked Singer South Africa, Popi Sibiya was unmasked as Pap and Wors, leaving the detectives in shock, as none of them had guessed correctly.
In her introduction, Pap and Wors revealed that she was one of four children. She also shared that her given name means “completeness”, but that it took her a while to figure out who she would be in the world. Added to those clues, her song choice, the Destiny’s Child hit “Say My Name”, had Sithelo convinced that she had cracked the delicious secret behind the Pap & Wors recipe.
More confident than ever that she had solved the mystery, Sithelo pointed out the actress Farieda Metsileng. However, mindful of another hint that Pap & Wors’ graduation had been publicly celebrated, J’Something guessed she might be either actress Masasa Mbangeni, who holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wits University, or Ayanda Thabethe, who has earned an MBA. Meanwhile, Somizi’s internal GPS led him to Anele Zondo – a name that had simply popped into his head, regardless of the clues.
All detectives were off course. We asked Popi a few burning questions. Take a look…
Q&A WITH POPI SIBIYA
What did you enjoy the most about being Pap and Wors?
What I enjoyed most from being Pap and Wors is the costume. It was different from anything I’ve seen before on the show. It was cute, it was playful and I thought that the audience would relate to it. (The costume) was funny also.
What surprised you the most about being on The Masked Singer South Africa?
The lenghts that the production team went to, to keep it a secret. I thought that was so cool. We wore masks, you know we wore a hoodie, all black, we were in cars that had tinted windows. No one was allowed to task, no one got to see us. It was all hush-hush. I thought that was so cool. They really wanted to keep it a secret and that’s what makes the show so interesting, that unmasking and that revealing is so important.
How did your social media followers react when you were unmasked?
They were so surprised because I usually take them with me everywhere I go in real time, I tell them everything. There are no secrets between us. So, when they saw me on the Masked Singer, they were like ‘oh my gosh, how did you manage to keep this from us’. They were very happy for me… for doing something outsdie my comfort zone. And they were sad that I left the show so early.
You’ve travelled across Africa. If you could have created a Mask inspired by your travels on the continent, what would it have been, and why?
It would definitely be an elephant, because I have searched for wild free roaming elephants in the barn and DRC many times and never found any, of course. But I also think that would have given it away, if I had designed my own costume.
The detectives had no clue who Pap & Wors was. What did you make of all their comments? Were you chuffed that they couldn’t figure you out?
I was very chuffed that they couldn’t figure it out. I think it would have been more interesting if they had found me out… they were way off the mark. So, that was funny to me. At some point Sithelo was like ‘oh my gosh’ I kow exactly who this is, and she was so sure of herself, that it made me nervous that she was about to reveal me. But she took a total left turn and named someone totally out of my field.
