Fagrie Lakay has opened up on his move to Pyramids FC and the fantastic start he has had to his career with the Egyptian club.
The former Cape Town City striker joined Pyramids on the last day of the January transfer window, in a move that took many by surprise.
Pyramids is Lakay’s sixth club. He made his debut at 15 for Santos before joining SuperSport United. He had a short spell on loan at Ajax Cape Town, before leaving SuperSport for Bidvest Wits. He joined City in 2019, and scored 17 goals in 64 games for the Citizens.
And the 24-year-old Bafana Bafana international has hit the ground running with the Egyptian giants, most recently scoring a brace in Pyramids 2-0 win against Zanaco in the CAF Confederation Cup last weekend.
Speaking exclusively to iDiski Times’ Rob Delport, Lakay says that after being thrown straight into action, he’s settled in well in Egypt.
“So far it’s been good, settling in, it’s just that I came here and we start playing, which I think is good for me,” Lakay told iDiski Times.
“But now on the other hand everything is settled, I’ve moved into my apartment and all of that, so that’s good.”
Lakay says the transfer happened very quickly, but he jumped at the chance, as he always wanted to test himself outside of South Africa.
“Ja, the move it was sudden,” he continued.
“But I don’t think it was something for me to really think about. I always said I would like to play outside of South Africa and I think this is a good opportunity for me to show my talent outside of the country and try and do well in another country.”
Lakay hit the ground running, scoring in friendlies, but in his first official game, against Al Ahli Tripoli, he was unlucky to hit the woodwork twice. However, he made up for that with his brace against Zanaco last weekend.
“Goals in the friendlies, no goals first two games, ja obviously for me as a striker I want to score every game and hitting the post twice in the first game I felt a bit unlucky,” he explained.
“But I told myself, I just need to keep on going, keep on working hard and doing what I’ve been doing because it will be close, it will come soon.
“And luckily for me I didn’t only get one, but two!! And I think that’s good for me as a striker, coming to a new team, getting to score a brace, I think overall it’s good for myself as well.
“And a good start for me, I would say. So from here onwards I would hope it gets better and I get the opportunity to score every game, and obviously I’ll put in the hard work to want to score every game, if not try and assist and help the team.
“But ja, for me as a player I’ll just try must best and I would love to score every game, Inshallah.”
