Portuguese-South African musician João Carlos Lisa Botelho da Fonseca, popularly known as J’Something, shared what viewers can expect from The Masked Singer South Africa season three.

The Masked Singer SA is set to return for season three on Saturday 4 July at 19:00 on it’s new home, SABC 2. Mpho Popps will once again step into the spotlight as the host for season three. Detectives Somizi Mhlongo, Skhumba, J’Something and Sithelo Shozi will also be returning for the third season.

J’Something opened up about what to expect from season three in an exclusive interview.

Q&A WITH J’SOMETHING

What can viewers expect from The Masked Singer this season as the series takes on a new home?

Expectations are always so personal. I think you have to come prepared to have fun when you click on The Masked Singer, like let’s play a game. It’s as if you were getting together around a table with your friends to play Monopoly. The Masked Singer is a detective game and I think you have to try and figure it out. I think the expectations should be fun, togetherness, a lot of laughter and a lot of entertainment.

From fan reactions when they are watching the show, do you think that they pick up different clues and guess differently from you do?

Yes! We have an in-house crowd of people and everytime we suggest something, you can hear a yes or no from the energy in the room. Which sometimes throws me off but I try and stay focused. And sometimes I’m like ‘oh okay, you’re with me,’ and I gain a little confidence. So sometimes it can hurt or boot the confidence.

In terms of the genres of music this season, has there been more diversity?

Yes, there has been such a strong diversity across the board. I think like the diversity that I felt in season three has really been ramped up. There’s so many different cultures represented, there’s so many different aspects of South Africa being represented, there’s so many different celebrities being represented. On the music front, it’s been so different. You’ve got some people singing golden oldies, you’ve got some people singing current tracks, you’ve got some people singing classics, there’s a variety. You never know what to expect, there’s international, there’s local. There is a strong local sense this year which has been very cool to see.

What are the odds of someone coming back from the previous season?

Anything is possible.

Can you talk me through the security process of you not being able to see any of the (masked) celebrities?

It’s always been a crazy experience of behind the scenes like you know we have a strict lockdown policy so if any of the masks are moving we are not allowed to move. We are in a completely different side of the building so we actually aren’t in the same vicinity of the building. But there is an extremely strict lockdown process. That’s the credibility of the show.
