Ex-SuperSport forward regains his mojo in Tanzania

He might have struggled with injuries last season, but Zimbabwe International and former SuperSport United gunslinger Prince Dube appears to have regained his scoring mojo for ambitious Tanzanian outfit, Azam ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Azam has been on a robust pre-season where the 25-year-old has been one of the exceptional players as he scored the solitary goal that propelled them to victory over Grand SC in Egypt on Wednesday.

Hopes are that the former Highlanders striker reinvents himself in the forthcoming campaign as Azam seeks to account for their second league title.

Teammate and compatriot Bruce Kangwa is impressed with how Dube has turned a new leaf following his injury ordeal. Dube and Kangwa have previously shared the same dressing room at Highlanders in Zimbabwe.

“He has been doing exceptionally well since returning from the nagging injuries, and l am happy we have been together in full training. From the way I see it, this is his revival, and we are all seeing it.

“You know, sometimes injuries can be a major setback for a footballer but what makes me thrilled is that he has managed to shrug them off, and so he is slowly getting his scoring boots again,” Kangwa told FARPost from Egypt, where Azam is currently camped.

Dube was the talk of Dar es Salaam following a storming start in his maiden 2020/21 season in the Tanzanian Premier Soccer League, where he notched 14 goals and was pretty poised to win the coveted golden boot.

But injuries derailed him from the race, which was eventually won by Simba Sports Club’s John Bocco, who had 16 goals to his name.

Dube ended that season in third position on the golden boot rankings behind Bocco and Chris Mugalu, who was second with 15 goals.

The Bulawayo-born forward also missed several crucial national team assignments, including two 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers versus Ethiopia and South Africa.

However, despite the rough patch he experienced, Dube remained a key part of the Zimbabwe senior national team and was part of the squad that participated in the last Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.
