Ex-Pirates Talent Hits Huge Milestone In Europe

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Marshell Munetsi has reached the 100-game milestone for Stade de Reims as he enjoys another standout campaign in Ligue 1.

Munetsi, 26, arrived in South Africa with FC Cape Town back in 2016 after responding to a Facebook post seeking players for trials, and the rest, as they say – is history.

The towering midfielder impressed during his assessment and a few months later was sent on trial at Pirates where he blew away Augusto Palacios in a friendly against their reserve team and was snapped up in a deal worth around R5-million.

But he never really established himself in his preferred midfield role at the club, having been loaned out to Baroka twice and then returning to feature as a right-centre-back for the Buccaneers before eventually leaving for France upon the expiry of his contract.

And he’s not looked back since arriving in the French top-flight as a key figure in the Reims midfield which has attracted interest from the English Premier League in months gone by.

This season, he’s scored five goals and registered three assists in 24 games, as they sit in ninth place in the league, with the Zimbabwe international developing into a powerful box-to-box midfielder.

Overall, Munetsi has scored 11 goals and registered seven assists for the club since his arrival from South Africa.
