After leading Comoros to the last-16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Amir Abdou has ended his eight-year spell to take the role of head coach of Mauritania.
Last month Abdou confirmed his decision to step down after 45 official games in charge in which his secured 11 wins, 16 draws while suffering 18 defeats.
Under his leadership the nation went as high as 127th in the FIFA rankings, having usually been outside the top 200 prior to his arrival.
Abdou’s success in a country with less than one million inhabitants was down to the incredible global search for talent in which he made full use of the diaspora in Europe.
Only one player from their 26-man squad was born in Comoros and his achievements have now landed him a more high-profile role with Mauritania who’s sacked former Simba head coach Didier Gomes with immediate effect.
Gomes failed to win a single game at the recent AFCON in Cameroon and makes way for Abdou, who will now be aiming to qualify for Ivory Coast 2023 and the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria.
