Former Kaizer Chiefs skipper Patrick Mabedi has backed Arthur Zwane to the hilt, saying he deserves the head coach job for the Soweto giants.
The ex-Chiefs centre-back said his former teammate Zwane had worked so hard for the team after rising through the ranks as a developmental coach all the way to the senior side.
The Malawian told FARPost it was only natural that Zwane should get the mantle because he had understudied top coaches such as Stuart Baxter and Steve Komphela.
“Arthur has played for the team; he has been in the development side coaching, moving up and down the ranks; therefore, he understands the culture and system at Chiefs. More importantly, he is someone who has gained experience working under coaches like Stuart Baxter and Komphela,” the former sweeper said.
The ex-Chiefs caretaker coach said he too got his chances to manage the team, albeit temporarily. “Chiefs have many legends, but the issue is how many are capable of managing the team? Among the legends, Arthur is more actively involved with the team at the moment. It also happened to me. It is time to entrust one of their own with the job,” the ex-Black Leopards assistant coach added.
Zwane served as an interim coach when Gavin Hunt left before handing over the mantle to Baxter, who too has gone. Chiefs have finished the just-ended season empty-handed, and reports are linking the likes of Benni McCarthy to the top job.
