Former Baroka FC star Gerald Phiri Junior has found his feet in Sudan after opening his scoring account for Al Hilal on Wednesday, writes Peter Kanjere.

Phiri scored via a trademark freekick to earn Al Hilal a hard-fought 2-1 win over Al Hilal Al Fasher at the Jabal Awliya Stadium in Khartoum.

Hilal Al-Fasher had gone ahead after scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute. However, Waddah pulled Al Hilal level in the 60th minute before the Malawian Phiri snatched the late winner.

The former Bidvest Wits winger told FARPost that he was now back on his feet after struggling due to injuries after signing for Al Hilal last year.

“I have settled well. I have only played two matches because of the injury, so not much to say about it now,” he said.

Phiri played for Al Hilal once in the CAF Champions League, which saw the Khartoum side miss out on the group stage slot after finishing bottom with a meagre four points. Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly qualified from Group A. Phiri represented Malawi at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
