South Africans have just returned from a busy, chaotic, and enjoyable festive season. As is often the case during the holidays, many households may have spent more than planned, simply because it was December.

With January known for tight budgets, the Kaya 959 Digital team visited three major grocery retailers to assess how far R1,000 can go when buying essential food items.
