Nabil Maâloul has submitted a public resignation after their heavy defeat to Al Ahly in their CAF Champions League first leg semi-final at the Stade Olympique de Radès on Friday.

The four-time African champions suffered a 3-0 defeat at home to virtually end their campaign ahead of the second leg in Cairo next week, with Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau a key figure in the drubbing last night.

The game which was behind closed doors, it marked the final nail in the coffin for his third stint at the club, a difficult task following on the success of Mouine Chaabani who won two African Champions League titles, something his own successor and club legend Rahdi Jaidi also found in a short stint last season.

“I understand the sadness and disappointment of the fans after this difficult loss, and I apologize to all the fans for not being able to bring joy to the hearts of our old fans last night,” he said in his official statement.

“Recently, the task was not easy for me and for the rest of the technical team and the players for several reasons that can be explained in the current situation; but I tried my best to find the appropriate solutions, overcome difficulties and achieve the best possible results.

“The call of duty house when my team needed me in a difficult period at the end of the overtime season, thank God, we succeeded in some things and failed in other things, and man makes mistakes and gets injured.

“Mostly for the benefit of my Tunisian Sporting Team, I decided to withdraw and submit my resignation to the club president.

“I call on all the fans to continue supporting the players for the rest of the journey in the championship, the cup, and the CAF Champions League.”

Taraji will now travel to Egypt for the second leg tie in what is expected to be a sold out affair for the Red Devils at the Cairo International Stadium en route to the final.
