Escaped lion has been captured in North West Province

  • A dramatic video showing an adult male lion leaping from a moving transport wagon near Lichtenburg has gone viral on social media.
  • North West authorities confirmed the successful capture of the escaped lion yesterday after it broke out of its trailer on the R49 motorway.
  • The lion was being transported from the Free State to Nietverdiend, and an official investigation into the circumstances of its escape is now underway.

Footage of an adult male lion dramatically leaping from the top of a moving wagon near Lichtenburg has caused a significant stir on social media.

The incident, which reportedly took place in the Bakerville area, was documented in two separate video clips shared on a social media platform this evening.

Authorities in the North West province have confirmed the successful capture of a lion that escaped from a transport trailer on the R49 motorway.

The big cat was being transported from the Free State province to Nietverdiend in the Ramotshere Moiloa Municipality when it managed to get out of its enclosure.

The Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism in the North West confirmed the animal’s capture. Department spokesperson, Jerry Matebesi, stated,

“Investigations are ongoing to determine what might have caused such an incident.”
