Former Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates coach Eric Tinkler has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko with immediate effect.
The club confirmed the appointment on Friday, describing Tinkler as a coach with a proven track record, vast top-flight experience, and an outstanding playing career.
Tinkler, who holds a CAF A Licence, has more than 30 years of experience in elite football. During his coaching career, he has led clubs including Cape Town City, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates, and more recently Sekhukhune United. Among his achievements are guiding Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final, reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final with SuperSport United, and winning domestic trophies, including the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout.
As a player, Tinkler earned 48 caps for Bafana Bafana, captained South Africa at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations, played at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and was part of the squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. He also enjoyed spells in England, Italy, and Portugal.
Asante Kotoko said Tinkler will work closely with Director of Football Stanley Menzo Purl as the club aims for success in Ghana and on the African continent.
“I’m honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions,” said Tinkler. “Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success, and ambition for development are well known across Africa. I look forward to working with the players, staff, and management to build a team that can compete and win both domestically and on the continental stage.”
